Todmorden 英国北部の谷にある緑の匂う町

マンチェスターからドバイ経由で、合計18時間のフライト。シベリア上空を飛べた頃と比べると、3時間ほど長いだろうか。そんな長旅にも、感覚としては少し慣れてきた気がする。それでも、帰国して1週間が経った今も、まだ時差ボケから抜け出せない。

Manchester to Dubai, then on to Japan — 18 hours of flying in total. Compared with the days when we could fly over Siberia, I suppose it’s about three hours longer now. I feel like I’ve got a bit more used to these long journeys, at least in terms of how they feel. Still, even though it’s been a week since I got back to Japan, I’m not over the jet lag yet.

Todmorden -英国北部の谷にある緑の匂う町-

マンチェスターから電車で３０分ほどのこの町について、友達がここに引っ越すまで、いや、正直今回行くまで名前も覚えていなかった。その友人曰く、「この町が私の人生を変えた。救ってくれた」そんな誰かにとって強く影響を与える町らしい。

Until my friend moved here — or, to be honest, until this trip — I could barely even remember the name of this town, about thirty minutes from Manchester by train.

According to her, “This town changed my life. It saved me.” It seems to be the sort of place that leaves a deep mark on the people who find it.

到着した日、30度を超える夏日だった。暑い天候が苦手なため「イギリスにそれを求めてない！」と心の中で嘆いた。空港までわざわざ迎えに来てくれた友人の車には、エアコンが付いていなかった。それがイギリスに帰ってきたことをさらに感じさせた。というわけで、窓を全開にして走るしかなく、声が風の音にかき消されてほとんど会話もできなかった。そんな状況がおかしく、僕は窓の外の景色を眺めながらニヤけた。

On the day I arrived, the temperature was over 30°C. I’m not very good with hot weather, so I remember thinking, “This isn’t what I came to England for!”

My friend had kindly come all the way to the airport to pick me up, but her car didn’t have air conditioning. Somehow, that made me feel even more like I was back in England.

So we had no choice but to drive with all the windows open. The sound of the wind drowned out our voices, and we could hardly have a conversation. There was something funny about the whole situation, and I found myself grinning as I looked out at the passing countryside.

Autechreの2人が生まれたRochdaleを通り過ぎて、Todmorden が近づくにつれて、風の中に草の匂いが混ざりはじめたのがわかった。1時間ほど車で走ると見渡すかぎり緑の丘が広がり、その上には風力タービンが並んでいる。そして斜面には羊や牛が放牧されていた。1996年の時ほどではないにしろ、体が軽くなっていくような感覚があった。

まさに、自分が求めていたのはこれだった。

As we passed through Rochdale, where the two members of Autechre were born, and got closer to Todmorden, I began to notice the smell of grass in the wind.

After about an hour on the road, green hills stretched as far as I could see. Wind turbines stood along the tops of the hills, while sheep and cattle grazed on the slopes below.

It wasn’t quite the same feeling as I had in 1996, but I could feel some of the weight lifting from my body.

This was exactly what I had been looking for.

僕が転がり込んだ友人宅で流れていて印象が強く残っているのは、このマンチェスター出身のピアノ・トリオ、GoGo PenguinとMatthew Halsall。GoGo Penguinはマンチェスターのレーベル、Gondwanaでインディー・ジャズの文脈から評価され、Blue Noteで世界的に広がり、現在はXXIM Recordsでポストクラシカル／エレクトロニカ寄りのインストゥルメンタル音楽として展開している。今年のフジロックにも出演予定だ。

Matthew Halsallは2008年に設立されたマンチェスターのレーベル、Gondwanaのオーナーの一人でもある。このレーベルのPortico Quartetも要チェック。彼はトランペット奏者／作曲家／プロデューサーでもある。アリス・コルトレーンやファラオ・サンダースといった往年のスピリチュアル・ジャズとWarpやNinja Tuneなどを融合させた独自の瞑想的なサウンドが特徴。UKジャズ・リバイバルの最重要人物でもあり、現代スピリチュアル・ジャズの中心人物一人として高く評価されている。

自分の街から生まれた音楽を聴くスタイルと聴ける環境も良い。

この機会にUKジャズの現状を調べてみると、現在、ロンドンとマンチェスターの二つの流れがある。マンチェスターはWarpなどのエレクトロニカの文脈を汲む、内省的なスピリチュアル・ジャズ。ロンドンはアグレッシブでエネルギーに満ちたミクスチャー・サウンド。らしい。
